For a considerable time, cultural programming in public television has been on the defensive. The marketplace seems to be more important than the viewer to public service broadcasters. Because of the stiff competition with commercial broadcasters, cultural programming and magazines are being pushed to unattractive slots or simply cancelled. Such developments undercut the official mandate of these programmes: Education, information, entertainment.
Experts from a number of different countries in Central Europe discuss the outlook for cultural programming in public broadcasting.
